G@mers Review: Super Mario Galaxy

Super Mario Galaxy

NOTE: This review was written before Christmas - sorry for the delay in adding it, which was due to our lazy and forgetful webmaster!!

Super Mario Galaxy
Wii

Well I've reviewed this one just in the nick of time, eh?

Well clearly not as the game came out a few weeks back, but I didn't want to join the thronging masses saying how wonderful this game is without really road testing it. Now I've just completed the 120 stars I feel qualified to make some observations without a straight jump into 'one of the best platform game ever 10/10'.. So here goes.

This game is undoubtedly amazing, let's get that out of the way. Both this and the previous proper Mario games Sunshine and Mario 64 have been consistently awesome plat formers even if we've had to wait several years each time for the next one to come out. Do I have any gripes with Galaxy though? You bet I do.

Gold coins. Every other Mario game sees you get a star for collecting 100 of these, not Mario Galaxy. Part of the fun of these 100 coin missions was that you had to explore each mission of a particular map to find out which one you could get the coins on. This added a bit of mystery and the lack of said mystery is a re-occurring theme in this game. Take the observatory as an example, it's this game's castle or village, but unlike the other games there are no secrets, no stars to find, no mirror to go through or sun to look up at. This is a real loss to this latest instalment.

Next up on the gripe list is the camera. They've got around camera issues by making it almost deliberate, so that you don't see stuff you aren't meant to. Occasionally it's a bit annoying although thankfully it's not as bad as Mario Sunshine Finally on the gripe list. It's a bit easy. Granted anyone who's on the purple coin level with the disappearing floors at the moment may beg to differ but trust me, overall, this is a lot easier than it's predecessors.

So that's the gripe list out of the way and these gripes do stop the game from being a ten, but let's get one thing clear: If you're buying a Wiii game for someone this Christmas - GET THEM THIS - if you're asking for a Wii game for Christmas - ASK FOR THIS - this is non-stop entertainment from start to finish appealing to all gamers no matter what preference of genre they have. So, finally, after a few weeks delay and 120 stars...

One of the best platform games ever
